Chamber meets with HIE to discuss broadband rollout
Published 20 Nov 2013The Chamber facilitated a meeting with Stuart Robertson, HIE’s Director of Digital and IT stakeholders on Monday 18th November to discuss the BDUK Next Generation Broadband roll-out across the Highlands & Islands as there was concern that Caithness was not being given priority.
The announcement concerning Inverness and Moray receiving Next Generation Broadband early next year is alongside BT’s Commercial roll-out in these areas and is due to the infrastructure being in place to enable the gaps to be easily filled.
The planned roll-out for Wick and Thurso will now be early 2015 with other outlying areas following later that year. This is because a certain amount of surveying needs to be undertaken and infrastructure put in place. Work on this will start to happen over the course of the next 12 months to meet these deadlines.
There is a commitment from HIE to have regular updates with the Chamber and IT stakeholders over the course of the next year to ensure these plans are on track.
Wick is scheduled to have ADSL2+ at the end of November giving potential speeds up to 24 Mb. However we know this is never really a reality but it will nevertheless be a huge improvement on what is currently available. Any business which is in Thurso or Wick who would like advice on accessing ADSL2+ can contact Chamber member Navertech on 01847 892892 for advice or if you have any broadband concerns, then please don’t hesitate to contact the Chamber.
We will also be issuing regular updates.
