COVID-19 Cancellation Fund for Creative Freelancers

The COVID-19 Cancellation Fund for Creative Freelancers is to support creative freelancers working in the arts, screen and creative sectors who are experiencing immediate financial hardship due to the loss of income because of cancellations and deferrals caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Scottish Government has committed £8m to this Fund, to be made available in two stages of £4m each. Applications for the first stage will open at 2pm on Thursday 6 January 2022.

Who can apply?

  • Freelance professionals whose work has direct creative outcomes and who have been impacted by cancellations or deferrals of work due to take place during the period 27 November 2021 – 31 March 2022
  • Freelance professionals whose work directly supports the making and presentation of creative work and has been impacted by cancellations or deferrals of work due to take place during the period 27 November 2021 – 31 March 2022

In both cases, your CV should evidence that you derive a significant proportion of your income from your role in creating or producing original artistic, screen, creative or design material (or events, in the case of the latter).

The Fund cannot support those who have an employment contract within the creative sector, who have been made redundant because of the impact of COVID-19, or those who are on zero-hours contracts but have been offered no work as a result of COVID-19.

What is available?

Eligible applicants can apply for a sum of between £500 and £2,000 plus access costs (if applicable). Applicants may only make one application to the fund.

What is the process?

Applicants will be asked to first select their art form or creative sector and supply Creative Scotland with their CV. Additional evidence can then be uploaded to demonstrate that you have lost work as a result of COVID-19 during the relevant period. This could be e.g. pictures/screenshots/scanned copies of correspondence or contracts (including emails, texts, etc.) – this must show both a firm commitment to engage you during this period AND provide evidence of cancellation or deferral.

There is no set deadline for applications, but Creative Scotland anticipate a high demand and encourage applicants to apply as early as possible after the fund opens on 6 January 2022.

Applications will be submitted via My Creative Scotland.
