Covid-19 Small Business Support Grant

As part of its response to the COVID-19 emergency, the Scottish Government is making grants available for certain businesses and has asked the Council to administer the Grant Scheme on its behalf within the Highland Council area.

Does my business qualify?

To establish if your business is eligible or not, please refer to the Scottish Government’s website pages (external link) or the Scottish Assessor (external link).

Eligibility for this grant is defined by the Scottish Government (external link). To be eligible your business premises must have been occupied on Tuesday 17 March 2020. Only businesses who are currently on the Non-Domestic Rates register may apply for this grant (i.e. businesses who pay council tax will not qualify). As of 12/05/2020 this scheme was extended so that properties occupied by charities can now apply for support. Read the article in full here.

  • Currently, businesses operating in an eligible premises and that were in receipt of the Small Business Bonus Scheme or Rural Relief as of 17 March 2020, can apply for a grant of £10,000 (external link)

Applicants must be able to fulfil the other criteria, and provide evidence that they are the rateable occupier of the property (this could include a letter from the landlord, i.e. registered ratepayer of the property, confirming the applicant was the rateable occupier of the property as at 17 March 2020)

  • From 5 May 2020, the £10,000 small business grant will be extended to include ratepayers with multiple properties with individual rateable values under £18,000 but whose cumulative rateable value is between £35,000 and £51,000 and as such currently do not qualify for Small Business Bonus Scheme

Self-catering businesses

There is a separate grant available for self-catering businesses. If you have a self-catering business, to apply please follow the guidance on our Self-Catering Business Grant page.

What can I apply for?

Businesses that qualify for both grants may request the £25,000 grant only.

From the 5th May, businesses which operate from a number of eligible properties will be able to apply for more than one grant. Further details on this recent change of eligibility and how to apply will be made available on this webpage nearer the time. To apply, click here.

If you applied for Nursery Relief, Disabled Relief, Sports Relief and Enterprise Areas Relief but are eligible for the Small Business Bonus Scheme you will also qualify for this grant.

Note that the Highland Council is experiencing a high volume of applications and has asked businesses to make every effort to fill out applications correctly first time. Read the guidance before applying and be sure to include a scan or an image of a  bank statement dated within the last 3 months.
